‘I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.’ Psalm 122:1. This was the sentiment of many of those who had gathered from all over the UK, and further afield, for the 2009 Summer Conference in Pembroke. The main conference speakers were Vernon Higham, Cardiff (the Presence of God), and Maurice Roberts, Inverness (Christ is All). The week began on the Monday night with a gospel service where Hubert Clement , Tonypandy, asked the question, ‘What is the gospel?’, and brought before us the gospel in all its glory and power.
In a sobering first address, Vernon Higham challenged us with the need to recognise the absence of the known and felt presence of God in our day and time, before we could begin to climb the ‘celestial ladder’ towards the ‘fullness of God’. In his remaining addresses, he urged us to begin climbing the celestial ladder of increasing degrees of God’s presence, until we reach the full presence of God in glory itself. Maurice Roberts reminded us that Christ is indeed all: Christ the God-Man, Christ our righteousness, Christ our propitiation and Christ the hope of Israel. In his final address, we were given a glimpse of the tremendous scope of God’s plan of redemption which includes both Jew and Gentile. By the end of the week, we felt that both speakers, side by side, had progressively taken us up that celestial ladder, of which Mr Higham had spoken.
This year, the first Welsh gospel preaching rally was held on the Friday afternoon, when Dafydd Morris gave a heart warming and challenging message on Zaccheus. We were reminded that Christ’s coming is both necessary and personal and our salvation is planned on God’s eternal calendar and reaches us in time.
A lovely feature of the morning meetings was the many ministers present who were asked to lead in prayer. One pastor thanked God for the sight of His aged servants who, having stood the fires and tests of time, continue to stand together to serve Him faithfully.

Due to the Lord’s gracious provision, in recent months, of church buildings to Tabernacle Cardiff, the Summer Conference 2010 will be held in Cardiff, from Monday 26th to Friday 30th July, when Malcolm Watts, Salisbury, will speak on the First Things, and Vernon Higham, on a Pilgrim’s Progress. Dafydd Morris (Carmarthen) will preach at the Monday night gospel service. Two Welsh services will be held at next summer’s conference: the preachers will be Hywel Roberts (Southampton) and Dafydd Morris (Carmarthen).
